+++ CANCELLED +++ Understanding Africa’s Mobility Struggles

31.03 - 01.04.2020 9:00 A.M. to 6 P.M.
Makerere University: Food Science Conference Hall, Kampala, Uganda

Mobility is a fiercely debated topic around the world today. Economic inequality, violent conflict, land management, climate change and an increasing scarcity of resources are all discussed to trigger movements. While being mobile is linked to possibilities of a better life, the mobility of the people of the “majority world” is actively controlled, contained and restricted. Inspired by ongoing debates around mobility trends and struggles, researchers in the research section "Mobilities" of the Cluster of Excellence “Africa Multiple” at the University of Bayreuth seek to develop deeper, reflexive, transdisciplinary insights into understanding the mobility of people, things and ideas.

This interdisciplinary workshop brings together an international group of scholars working on struggles over mobility and immobility. It shall kick-start discussions around the tentative conceptual term of 'Mobility Struggles', drawing attention towards conflicts around mobility in four thematic areas:

  • Refugee mobility and encampment in historical perspective’
  • Invisible Intellectuals. Endangered Scholars and African Academic Mobilities’
  • Resource Struggles and (im)mobilities in Africa’
  • Green Grab and the consequences for (im)mobility’
