Circulations, decolonizations, unbalances. Anticolonial networks and links between the reviews Mensagem, Présence Africaine and Black Orpheus

Dr. Noemi Alfieri

Abstract

The lecture aims at thinking about the connections between the editorial projects of Mensagem (Lisbon), Présence Africaine (Paris and Dakar) and Black Orpheus (Ibadan). It will reflect on the mobility of objects and ideas through the networks established within Africa and Europe by negritudinists, Pan-African or anti-colonial writers and intellectuals that were reflected on those reviews. The circulations of texts, authors, and translation between those three projects was connected to a conception of art committed to the dignification of cultures and knowledges beyond Eurocentric conceptions. While it aims at mapping connections, circulations and translations of printed material, the lecture will also make and effort towards problematizing dynamics and unbalances that characterized those publications, related both to intellectual displacement and to the consequences of the colonial rules on a conceptual and socio-political plan.
